Off-Duty NYPD Officer in Critical Condition After Rollover Crash on New York State Thruway

An NYPD officer is in critical condition following a rollover crash on the New York State Thruway Sunday night, officials said.

The crash happened around 8:30 p.m. between exits 15A and 16 near the village of Kiryas Joel, according to New York State Police.

Police say Officer Alexis Penate, of Highland Mills, lost control of his Jeep Wrangler after hitting the back of a 2003 Hyundai. The Jeep overturned several times, ejecting Penate onto the roadway.

Penate was air lifted to Westchester Medical Center with head trauma and internal injuries. He was listed in critical condition Monday morning.

It was believed earlier on Monday that Penate had suffered only minor injuries. He was off-duty at the time of the crash, police said.

The 29-year-old driver and passenger of the Hyundai were not injured.

The cause of the accident is under investigation, police said.
