60 Kids Checked Out After Fumes From Bus Depot Waft Into Brooklyn Elementary School: Officials

Sixty children at a Brooklyn elementary school were being evaluated after complaining of symptoms from exposure to an odor that wafted into their classrooms from a nearby bus depot Friday morning, authorities said.

Fire officials say the fumes are not toxic and all the children exposed to the smell at P.S. 24 on 38th Street in Sunset Park are expected to be OK.

No one was taken to the hospital as of 12 p.m., but school was dismissed early.

Fire officials say the odor from the Jackie Gleason Bus Depot next door wafts the school's way every so often when the depot workers clean out tanks and the contents spill into the sewer system.

Representatives for the bus depot couldn't immediately be reached for comment.
