Octogenarian Veteran Dies in Queens Blaze

An 88-year-old Korean War veteran has died in a fire in Queens, officials and neighbors said Sunday.

The blaze on 87th Street in East Elmhurst was reported to first responders at around 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

The octogenarian was discovered on the first floor of the home, unconscious with severe burns. He was declared dead at the scene. Two firefighters suffered minor injuries.

Neighbors said the man was a Korean War veteran who lived alone. They recalled another fire at the home a few years ago.

Officials are investigating the cause of the fire.
