The New York Police Department wants to track vehicles and install a web of surveillance cameras in Midtown Manhattan to protect it from terrorist attacks.
Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly told the City Council at a budget hearing on Tuesday that the proposed network would allow real-time monitoring of the area between 39th and 59th streets from river to river.
The plan is similar to a $92 million counterterrorism network under development in lower Manhattan in response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
"We want to take that model, protecting the 1.7 square miles south of Canal and replicate it in midtown Manhattan," Kelly told The Daily News.
Possible targets in the area include the United Nations and the Empire State and Chrysler buildings.
Kelly said the initiative also would include heavily armed officers and radiation and bioterrorism detectors. The system could cost $58 million.
