NYPD Offers Cash for Guns in Buyback Event

The NYPD is holding a gun buyback event in Harlem next weekend, offering up to $200 per gun turned in, no questions asked.

The buyback is being funded by the Manhattan district attorney's office.

Police will offer a $200 pre-paid card for every operable handgun or assault rifle turned in at the Abyssinian Baptist Church next Saturday, June 18, and $25 for every operable rifle, shotgun and airgun.

They'll offer cash for up to three guns turned in per person.

No questions will be asked of anyone who turns in guns at the buyback, the NYPD says.

Guns must be placed in a plastic or paper bag or box, and once the gun is screened and determined as operable by officers, the cash card will be issued.

The Abyssinian Baptist Church on 132 Odell Clark Place will serve as the drop-off site from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Licensed gun dealers and active or retired law enforcement officers are not eligible to participate in the program.

The NYPD occasionally holds gun buybacks as part of an effort to remove weapons from city streets and to prevent them from getting into the hands of criminals. Each event typically nets several hundred weapons.
