NYPD Seeking Manhattan Man, 89, Missing Since Friday

Police are hoping the public can help locate an 89-year-old Manhattan man who has been missing since early Friday morning.

Manfred Scharfstein, who goes by the name Fred, remained missing Sunday evening, according to the NYPD. He has lived in the same Upper West Side apartment for more than 25 years.

His family has visited areas hospitals and stores and several homeless shelters in their attempts to find him, said Ilan Scharfstein, a nephew.

"To the best of our knowledge, Fred left his building of his own free will, but agitated, around 1 a.m. on Friday morning," he said. "Unfortunately, he left his apartment without his wallet, so we believe that he has no ID or money on him. He has not been heard from since then."

He was last seen wearing a light green jacket, tan pants and black sneakers, police said. He is described as 6-feet-1-inch tall and 165 pounds.

Scharfstein arrived in New York in the 1950s and worked as a courier in the financial industry, his family said.

The NYPD is asking anyone with information to call the Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS.
