A New York City police officer who was stabbed in the eye while trying to make an arrest is recovering slowly at a hospital, where he will likely remain for weeks.
Sgt. Timothy Smith's father Frank said his son “can't speak,” but can “look at photographs” of relatives and loved ones.
Doctors told the family it would be a long recovery, Smith said.
Sgt. Smith was stabbed while responding Jan. 15 to a call of an emotionally disturbed man at a residence, police said. The man has been charged with attempted murder.
His commanding officer in the 101st Precinct says such “small” jobs can turn dangerous quickly.
