NYPD Cop Gets 10 Years for Fiancée's Death

Cop killed cop

A New York City police instructor has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for the shooting death of his fiancée, who also was an NYPD officer.

Alexis Chaparro pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter last year. Officer Sonia Garcia was killed in their home in Bay Shore, Long Island.

Chaparro contended he was concerned about burglars in their neighborhood and shot Garcia after being awakened from a sound sleep.

He was initially charged with second-degree murder. Prosecutors said the plea deal was accepted to ensure Chaparro got a "substantial prison sentence."
