Hit-Run Driver Hits, Critically Injures Woman With Walker in NYC

A woman using a walker was run down and critically injured by a hit-and-run driver in the Bronx, police said.

The car hit 47-year-old Madeline Bengochea around 8 p.m. Monday on Williamsbridge Road at Waring Avenue in Allerton.

Surveillance video from a nearby store shows Bengochea pushing the walker and groceries as she crosses the street outside of a crosswalk. Moments later, a car slams into her, knocking her to the ground.

She was taken to Jacobi Medical Center and listed in critical condition. Her daughter, Kimberly Saova, said Bengochea is heavily sedated and has broken bones and other injuries.

"I feel like I'm living a nightmare, but she's OK and I know she will be," Saova said.

She added, "(the driver) should have at least gotten out of the car."

Police did not immediately have a description of the vehicle, although it appears to be an older model white sedan.

Anyone with information about the driver should call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
