A man armed with a knife was shot and killed by an NYPD officer in Brooklyn on Tuesday night, police said.
The man, identified as 63-year-old James Owens, was wounded in the shooting and later died at a hospital.
Owens was shot as police responded to a 911 call in Canarsie about a nonviolent, emotionally disturbed person, according to police.
Owens' sister had placed the 911 call and let the officers into the 99th Street home around 9:30 p.m.
As responding officers arrived, Owens went to the kitchen and grabbed a 13-inch knife. He then moved towards the officers, police said.
One officer used a stun gun on Owens, but to no avail. That's when another officer shot him with his firearm, hitting him three times, including at least once in the chest, police said.
Owens was rushed in critical condition to Brookdale Hospital, where he was pronounced dead late Tuesday or early Wednesday morning.
A knife was recovered at the scene, police said.

The shooting was just hours before another deadly police-involved shooting in Prospect Heights.
