A North Carolina man has been sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for the Easter 2006 shooting death of a 2-year-old boy in the Bronx.
Darryl Hemphill, of Cary, North Carolina, was sentenced Wednesday after being convicted of murder in the death of David Pacheco, Jr. The toddler was struck by a bullet while riding in a minivan driven by his mom.
Prosecutors say the 37-year-old man shot at a crowd following a fistfight. He missed but one of his bullets struck the passing minivan.
An off-duty EMT tried to save the boy but he died on the way to the hospital.
An associate of Hemphill was originally charged with the killing. He was later cleared and pleaded guilty to a weapons charge for his role in the incident.
