NYC Man Charged in Toronto Machete Attack

A New York City man has been charged with attempted murder in a machete attack in downtown Toronto, police said.

Arlington Thompson, 35, appeared in court Thursday morning wearing a red hoodie and blue jeans. He said only his name and thank you after the brief appearance. He was remanded into custody with a hearing set for Dec. 30.

Police said the attack against a 30-year-old man occurred on around 5 p.m. Wednesday, near the Eaton Centre, Canada's largest retail mall, on the busiest shopping day of the season. The victim suffered serious injuries to his head and leg. Police said they believed the attack was unprovoked.

Thompson, of Queens, was charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, assault with a weapon and possession of a dangerous weapon.

Police said they're seeking witnesses to the attack.
