Man's Nose Broken in Possible Hate Crime: NYPD

Police say an assault in Hell’s Kitchen that left a man with a broken nose may have been a hate crime.

Two attackers jumped a 36-year-old man just before 5 a.m. last Tuesday while making reference to his sexual orientation, according to police.

The attack happened at Ninth Avenue and West 51st Street.

Council member Corey Johnson said no one should have to walk down the street in fear of being attacked because of sexual orientation or gender identity.

"I am appalled to learn of a possible anti-LGBT assault that occurred in Hell's Kitchen,” Johnson said. “This cowardly act is contrary to everything our city stands for.”

The victim was taken to St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital, where he was treated for a broken nose and facial bruises.

Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers at 800-577-TIPS.
