NYC Landmarks OK's Greenwich Village Plan

The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission has approved a scaled-down version of an $835 million tower for St. Vincent's Hospital in Greenwich Village.

The commission approved a 19-story building on Tuesday. The project still requires approval from the Planning Commission and City Council.

Last October, the commission approved demolition of the O'Toole building, a six-story former maritime union hall. The new tower would be built on that site.

On Monday, preservationists sued the commission and the hospital, seeking to block the O'Toole building's demolition.

At a later date, the commission will consider the hospital's plan for condominiums which would generate about $300 million toward construction costs.
