Several Injured in Wrong-Way Crash on FDR: NYPD

A car headed the wrong way on the Franklin D. Roosevelt Drive crashed head-on into two other vehicles Thursday morning, hurting four people and jamming traffic on the Manhattan highway for hours, officials say.

The car, a Kia sedan, was headed south on the road’s northbound lanes at about 4 a.m. when it struck a Chevrolet Traverse and a Honda Pilot near 23rd Street, the NYPD says.

The drivers of all three cars were taken to Bellevue Hospital with serious injuries, police say, with the 33-year-old woman driving the Kia suffering critical injuries. A 28-year-old woman who was riding in the Kia also was hurt.

Police say the Kia entered the highway going the wrong way from an exit ramp on East 34th Street, police say. An officer saw the vehicle enter the highway and followed it for a short time, but the car crashed before the cop could stop the driver.

It's not clear if drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash. No arrests have been made.

The northbound lanes were closed for several hours after crash, causing a backup that at one point stretched past the Williamsburg Bridge. All lanes reopened shortly after 7 a.m.

Several MTA bus lines that use the FDR also reported delays.
