15-Year-Old Girl Killed While Trying to Cross NY Highway ID'd

A 15-year-old girl was struck and killed as she tried to cross a four-lane New York highway has been identified. 

Hope Vandermark, of Middletown, was struck on the westbound side of the Route 17 near exit 121 in Wallkill in Orange County, state police say. She had been crossing with a group of five people. She was pronounced dead at the scene. 

Nicholas Hurst, 20, of Bloomingburg, was driving the Chevrolet pickup that struck Vandermark. He wasn't charged. Police determined he wasn't impaired, distracted or speeding. 

He told police he didn't see the girl, who was wearing dark clothing.
