Man Dies After Fleeing Crash, Hitting Tree: Police

A Long Island man died Sunday after he allegedly fled the scene of a non-fatal hit-and-run accident and crashed into a tree, police said.

Police say that Anthony Lapicola, 50, was backing his Toyota RAV 4 out of a driveway on Candlewood Road in Brentwood at 4:45 p.m. when he hit a BMW that was traveling east on the road.

Lapicola allegedly fled the scene of the accident and headed north on Bishop Road.

A short time later, he crashed his vehicle into a tree near Ninth Avenue.

Although he was rushed to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, he died of his injuries.

The driver of the DMW was not injured in the initial crash.
