A man staggered up to a home, injured and covered in blood, in what is believed to be a machete attack on Long Island prompted by a dispute over a woman, authorities say.

Three roommates were still cleaning blood off their house and car Friday morning, hours after they had the gruesome encounter.

The roommates say they heard loud screaming around 11:30 p.m. Thursday night outside their home on Wicks Road in Brentwood.

When they looked outside, they saw a bloodied man banging on their house and pleading for help.

The three men say they were scared for their lives and called police.

When officers and EMS arrived, the roommates saw that the man was badly wounded and had numerous wounds across his body.

The victim was taken to an area hospital in unknown condition. Police say the former boyfriend of the victim's girlfriend attacked him in a fight over the woman. The suspect was arrested later Friday.
