Man Taken Into Custody After Standoff With Police in Yorktown

A gunman was in custody on Tuesday night after a tense standoff with police in Westchester, authorities said.

Officers were called to a home along Crompond Road around 8 p.m. for a report of an assault.

Responding officers said they heard, “the unmistakable sound of a shotgun being pumped,” police said. The officers backed off and surrounded the home, and a negotiator made contact with the man inside.

About two hours after the situation began, the 40-something-year-old man inside gave himself up, police said.

Police believe no shots were fired, and no one was reported injured.

Authorities initially thought there was a hostage in the home, but they later said the man was alone.

“As far as we know there was only one person in the house. The person that was allegedly assaulted was not in the residence,” Yorktown Police Dept. Lt. Tom Gentner said.

The man was taken into custody, and police are investigating the alleged assault that led police to the home in the first place.

Yorktown is about 30 miles north of New York City in Westchester.
