NY Doesn't Renew Coyote Trap Permits

New York state has decided not to renew coyote-trapping permits in two suburban communities where attacks occurred last year.

The Department of Environmental Conservation says permits are not warranted in Rye and Rye Brook because there were few coyote sightings over the winter.

Police will still have the authority to scare, injure or even kill a coyote if it is posing a risk to a person or pet.

Last year in Rye, coyotes killed a dog and bit a 6-year-old and a 3-year-old.

In Rye Brook, a rabid coyote was killed in September. Authorities believe it was the same one that had threatened two children and bitten a man in the leg.
