12-Year-Old Boy Rescued From Icy Canal on Long Island

A 12-year-old boy was rescued Monday after he fell into an icy canal on Long Island.

The boy was walking along the docks behind Fire Island Avenue in Babylon around 4:30 p.m. when he slipped and fell into the water, police said.

Suffolk County Police Officer Kristen Derkevics and a good Samaritan pulled the boy out of the water.

Before the officer arrived, the good Samaritan extended a shovel to the boy for him to hold on to.

The boy was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
