3 Charged in NJ Transit Platform Shooting, Robbery

Three people have been charged in connection with two robberies 75 minutes and a block apart in New Jersey, including one in which a man was shot on the platform of a downtown NJ Transit train.

Prosecutors say the suspects, ages 18, 19 and 20, face robbery and weapons offenses in the Aug. 1 crime spree. Authorities responded to the Elizabeth train station on West Grand Street shortly before 4:30 a.m. that day and found a man shot on the platform; his cash and cellphone were gone.

About an hour later, police responded to a report of another robbery on Cherry and West Grand streets a block away. There, a second victim told authorities his cash and cellphone had been stolen by three people.

Twenty minutes after that, police stopped the three suspects in downtown Elizabeth. The two stolen cellphones were recovered in the course of the arrests, prosecutors said.

The robbery victim who was shot was treated at the hospital and released; it wasn't clear where he had been shot. It wasn't known if the second victim was injured in the robbery.
