Newark Police Shooting Leaves 2 Men in Critical Condition

Prosecutors are investigating a shooting during a police pursuit in New Jersey's largest city in which an officer critically wounded two men.

The Essex County prosecutor's office says a grand jury will be presented with the case following a review of the shooting in Newark at about 11:30 p.m. Monday.

Prosecutors say preliminary investigation indicates that Newark police tried to stop a vehicle but the driver didn't stop, and "shots were fired by one police officer at three separate locations."

Two Newark men in the car, 35-year-old Andrew Dixon and 46-year-old Gregory Griffin, were shot and in critical condition at University Hospital. A loaded semi-automatic handgun was found in the vehicle.

Prosecutors say use of force is taken seriously and their professional standards bureau will review the evidence carefully.
