Two police officers in New Jersey were justified in shooting a man investigators say was in the process of stabbing his parents inside their home, prosecutors announced Monday.
The Mercer County Prosecutor's Office said in a statement Monday that the officers acted to protect themselves and others when they fatally shot 36-year-old Shawn Clyde on April 1, 2015.
"The undisputed facts of this matter reveal that the officers were acting to protect themselves and others," the prosecutor's office said in a statement.
The officers arrived at the home on Nottinghill Lane in Kuser Village and found Clyde stabbing his 54-year-old father with a steak knife, prosecutors said in a statement.
Police repeatedly told Clyde to drop the knife, but he refused. One of the officers said Clyde looked at the officers with a cold stare and resumed stabbing his father.
Two officers then each fired one shot at Clyde, both hitting him, authorities said.
Officers also found Clyde's 54-year-old mother suffering from stab wounds.

The suspect and his parents were taken to the Capital Health Regional Medical Center after the shooting. Clyde died of his injuries two weeks later.
His mother said her son had been acting irrationally and had stopped taking medication for schizophrenia.
