A man has been sentenced to 15 years in the death of a retired schoolteacher during what authorities said was a robbery in her New Jersey home.

Essex County prosecutors say 52-year-old Bruce Hay of Newark must serve 85 percent of the term imposed Friday before being eligible for parole in the July 2017 death of 85-year-old Annie King.

Hay was convicted in May of robbery, burglary and theft, but jurors acquitted him of more serious charges and deadlocked on others. Prosecutors say he pleaded guilty to reckless manslaughter in September.

Authorities alleged that Hay kicked in the door of King's home and tried to take her pocketbook, assaulting her when she resisted. She died two days later. Prosecutors said trial testimony alleged he had previously stolen from her.
