Separate Shootings Leave Two Dead in Newark

The victims were shot in two separate incidents on Friday.

Prosecutors say the holiday weekend shooting deaths of two men in Newark do not appear to be related.

The victims -- 37-year-old Troy Shelton of Newark and 21-year-old Jackie Pena, whose hometown was not disclosed -- were shot in separate incidents on Friday. No arrests have been made in either case, and authorities were still working Saturday to determine motives for the shootings.

Shelton was shot around 4 p.m. in the area of Grumman and Elizabeth avenues in the city's South Ward and died a short time later, while Pena was shot at a Smith Street residence in the city's West Ward around 10 p.m.

Essex County's Homicide Task Force is investigating both shootings.
