United Flight Halts Takeoff From Newark After Report of Smoking Engine: Officials

A United Airlines flight from Newark to Boston was scrubbed from takeoff Tuesday morning after crews got reports of smoke coming from one of the aircraft's engines as it was preparing to depart, officials said.

A spokeswoman for the airline said that Flight 1550 returned to the gate shortly after taxiing for takeoff.

Chopper 4 footage from the scene showed fire crews surrounding the plane on a runway, and a passenger told NBC 4 New York that they were told that an engine issue and an oil leak were to blame.

The spokeswoman said the plane was brought safely back to a gate and the 140 passengers aboard the Boeing 737 were being put on another plane.

A maintenance inspection was being performed on the craft Tuesday.
