New York City plans to send government lawyers and social workers to Texas to provide free legal help to families being detained at the border.
Democratic New York Mayor Bill de Blasio announced the plan Monday. He says about 15 volunteer attorneys and social workers are expected to work with a legal assistance group in Dilley, Texas, for a week in September. The city's philanthropic arm will pay their travel expenses.
U.S. immigration authorities separated more than 2,000 migrant children from their parents at the border this spring before Republican President Donald Trump reversed course on June 20 amid an international outcry and said families should remain together.
More than 1,800 children had been reunited with parents or sponsors as of late last week.
