New Yorkers are spending as much as $4.3 million per minute on Powerball tickets Wednesday in the hours before the historic drawing worth $1.5 billion, the state gaming commission announced.
Nationwide, more than $600 million in tickets were expected to be sold before the drawing, nearly double the $326.6 million sold Tuesday, according to the Multi-State Lottery Association.
Since the last winning draw for the game in on Nov. 7, $2.6 billion worth of tickets have been sold, including $231.2 in the Empire State.
State lottery officials say sales have amounted to about $80.9 million for schools.
The winning numbers will be drawn just before 11 p.m.
