2 Suspects in Shooting of New Jersey Officer Plead Not Guilty

Two of the three men charged in the shooting of an undercover police officer in a New Jersey shopping center parking lot pleaded not guilty in court Wednesday.

Melvin Guzman, 19, of Garfield, and Patrick Morel, 21, of Clifton, were arrested after the shooting Tuesday. Bail for each has been set at $750,000.

The third suspect, 25-year-old Passaic resident Rafael Vasquez, remains hospitalized with a gunshot wound. His bail was set at $2 million.

All three defendants face robbery, aggravated assault and weapons charges. Vasquez is also charged with attempted murder.

The wounded Paramus officer, whose name hasn't been released, was making a marijuana buy when he was shot in the right hip and left lower leg. The wounds are not considered life-threatening.
