Customers Complain Over Nathan's New Spuds

A spokesman at the famed Coney Island restaurant said its usual supply of the low-starch Katahdins was depleted, and it was temporarily substituting the higher-starch Russet Burbanks

Customers are complaining about a change in the potato used for Nathan's Famous' beloved french fries.

"You can definitely taste the difference," said one visitor, from Levittown, L.I.

"It's mushier," another man said.

"They aren't the fries I've been going there for all my life and are a poor substitute to boot," a poster named Elephant Man wrote on Coney Island USA's bulletin board. "Sorry Nathan's, these potatoes are inferior."

A spokesman at the famed Coney Island restaurant said a shortage in Maine led to a replacement of its usual supply of the low-starch Katahdins with the higher-starch Russet Burbanks.

Purists will have to "white-knuckle it," for a while, Shea said.

The good news? "It should be short-lived," he said.
