Runaway Garbage Truck Smashes Into Home in Mount Vernon

A runaway garbage truck plowed into a car and the front of a home in Mount Vernon Tuesday morning.

A sanitation crew was loading garbage into the truck, and no one was behind the wheel when the truck slipped into gear and took off, officials said.

It smashed into car, then into the front porch of a two-family house.

No one was hurt.

Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Thommas says sanitation trucks and other public works vehicles are long overdue for replacement. But the city council said they don't have the bond rating to raise the money for the vehicles.

It's the second instance of a problem with public vehicles in the city since someone put rubber gloves into the gas tanks of snow plows recently.
