Military Flyover Kicks Off Fleet Week

Annual event sets sail on Wednesday

New York City kicks off its 23rd annual Fleet Week celebration today, with two military flyovers ushering in the parade of ships.

Police say the first flyover came at 8:35 a.m. Wednesday over the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge with four naval jet aircraft. The second happened at 9:09 a.m. with eight aircraft passing over New York Harbor.

Fleet Week events will include  free tours of the ships moored at docks in Manhattan and Staten Island, military band performances and tactical demonstrations by troops.

And of course sailors decked in full military whites stealing all the attention.

Active-duty military personnel and veterans can also ride for free on NY Waterway commuter ferries this week.

About 100,000 people are expected to visit the warships this week.
