A husband and wife, both 74 years old, died when their vehicle crashed through a steel railing and plunged into the water near a New Rochelle park Tuesday, police said.

The vehicle drove through a steel railing and plunged into the Echo Bay at Hudson Park and Beach shortly before 3 p.m., police said.

Ralph Simpson was pulled unconscious from the submerged vehicle by a police diver shortly after the crash, according to police. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The body of his wife, Arlene Simpson, was pulled from the vehicle later in the afternoon as police divers were working to remove the vehicle from the water, police said. Police she wasn't found during the first recovery due to a "zero visibility" in the water. 

An investigation is ongoing.
