Man Shot, Killed in Jersey City

The 28-year-old victim was killed in the police-involved shooting.

A 28-year-old father of two was shot and killed by police early Saturday morning in Jersey City, police said.

Just before 2 a.m., police wanted to question Deron Kittrell at Monticello Avenue and Brinkerhoof Street. According to bystanders, police believe he had a gun on him.

When they tried to talk to the man, he ran off, and that's when police shot him, say witnesses.

"The dude tried to run from them. They shot him down," said one witness, who asked not to be identified. "He didn't threaten them, shoot at them, nothing.  They shot him."

Prosecutor Edward DeFazio says Kittrell pointed a 9 mm semi-automatic with an expanded magazine -- which is illegal in New Jersey -- at Officer Louis Mecka. Kittrell never fired it.

He was a lifelong resident of Jersey City, and family members say he was "never confrontational."

"If drama was on his right, he went to the left," said his aunt, Tamara Kittrell.
