Police Seek Man Who Lured Schoolgirl Into Car

After talking to the girl about her shiny shoes, the driver released the girl several blocks away

A man who lured a young schoolgirl into his car in Queens is being sought by police, though he released her after driving several blocks.

Investigators on Thursday released a surveillance video showing what they believe is the silver-colored car driven by the suspect.

The driver, sitting in his parked car, spotted the 10-year-old girl just before 7 a.m. Wednesday at a school bus stop near her home on 102 Street in the Woodhaven neighborhood, police said. He then offered offered to drive her to school.

Benjamin Riera, the girl's grandfather saw her get into the car and rushed to the front of the vehicle to prevent it from leaving, he told NBC 4 New York. But the driver backed up, pulled out and sped off.

After talking to the girl about her shiny shoes, the driver released the girl several blocks away, Riera said.

The girl then walked to her summer school class, but her frantic mother picked her up.

The suspect faces a charge of endangering the welfare of a child, investigators said.

Anyone with information about the suspect is asked to call the NYPD Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS.
