Man Gets 35-Year Term in Shooting of Teen Killed in Robbery on Football Field Roselle Union County

Damel Mitchell, 17, was killed at Sylvester Land Memorial Field, near Polk Elementary School

A man convicted in the shooting death of a teenage boy during a robbery at a youth football field has been sentenced to 35 years in state prison, authorities say.

Nyfee Mallory, 23, must serve at least 30 years of the term imposed Friday before he becomes eligible for parole, Union County prosecutors say. He was convicted in March on murder and robbery charges.

Two other men have admitted roles in the slaying of Damel Mitchell and are awaiting sentencing. Both were 17 when the killing occurred but eventually pleaded guilty as adults to aggravated manslaughter charges.

Mitchell was killed after the three men lured him to the field with the intent to rob him, prosecutors say. Mitchell was shot to death when he tried to flee.
