Man Convicted in Shooting Death of 16-Year-Old Babysitter

A man was found guilty of manslaughter in the shooting death of a 16-year-old girl who was babysitting her toddler cousin.

Taariq Stephens faces up to 25 years in prison after his conviction on Friday, the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office said.

Prosecutors accused him of shooting Shemel Mercurius in May 2016 with a submachine rifle, inside an apartment where she was babysitting her 3-year-old cousin. The cousin wasn't hurt.

She died at a hospital after being found with multiple gunshot wounds.

Stephens is scheduled to be sentenced on Jan. 16.
