Man Clings to Life After He's Hit by Fleeing SUV in Union Square: Police

A man is clinging to life after he was hit by a fleeing dark-colored SUV at Union Square, police say.

The 34-year-old pedestrian was hit in a crosswalk just before 1 Tuesday morning while he was crossing East 14th Street when the SUV, which was turning eastbound onto 14th Street, hit him and didn’t slow down, leaving the man in the street, according to officials.

The man was taken to an area hospital in critical condition. He was undergoing surgery Tuesday morning.

Officers quickly responded and closed the area off to traffic while they investigated. The area reopened around 4 a.m.

Police continue to investigate and are looking for surveillance footage from nearby businesses that might have captured the hit-and-run driver's car.
