A 27-year-old man has been apprehended by U.S. Marshals in Indiana in connection with a hit-run in Rockland County more than a year ago that injured a 7-year-old girl on her way to school.
Carlos Osvaldo Garcia-Gonzalez, who lives in Indiana, was identified as a suspect in the Nov. 21, 2017 hit-run in Congers over the course of an "intensive investigation," Clarkstown police said Thursday. He is awaiting extradition.
Officials believe he was the driver who hit the little girl near Lakewood Drive and Lakeland Avenue around 8 a.m. that November morning. The child survived, but she was left with what at the time appeared to be a broken leg.
Clarkstown police said they developed information that led to Garcia-Gonzalez over the last 14 months or so and learned where he lived. Then they handed it off to U.S. Marshals, who apprehended the suspect in his hometown of Brazil, Indiana. It wasn't clear what he was doing in New York at the time of the hit-run.
"The Clarkstown Police Department applauds the outstanding work of the U.S. Marshals Service for their never ending pursuit of this suspect," Clarkstown Police Chief Raymond McCullagh said in a statement. "You can’t come into this community, hit a 7-year-old girl on her way to school, drive away and think we will not do everything in our power to apprehend you. Today’s arrest shows the commitment of the law enforcement community throughout the nation."
It wasn't immediately clear if Garcia-Gonzalez had an attorney.
