Man, 29, Fatally Shot Near Elementary School in NJ: Authorities

Witnesses said they heard at least two gunshots

A 29-year-old man was fatally shot Friday morning two blocks from an elementary school in a New Jersey community, authorities said.

The victim, Joshua Hartsfield, was shot at about 6 a.m. outside of a home in the 900 block of Carnegie Avenue in Plainfield.

The site is two blocks from the Evergreen Elementary School.

A resident of the neighborhood told NBC 4 New York that she heard two gunshots.

Her husband, a police officer, then left the house to check out the disturbance and said the victim was walking along the street and didn't appear to live in the neighborhood, she said.

Another neighbor, Michael Wiggs, said he was startled by the noise.

"I heard these two gunshots and I stopped and went back in because I was a little nervous to hear shots," he said. "After that I saw a gentleman on the ground. They were trying to resuscitate him."

Additional information about the shooting wasn't available.

Anyone with information about the shooting should call Union County Crime Stoppers at 908-654-8477.
