School Bus Driver Killed, 6 Hurt in L.I. Crash

A cement truck was also involved in the accident, which took place at Oyster Bay Road and Matinecock Court around 3:20 p.m.

A school bus driver was killed and several others were hurt when a school bus was broadsided by a cement truck in Locust Valley Monday afternoon, authorities said.

Authorities said a 44-year-old cement truck driver was going southbound on Oyster Bay Road and apparently did not know his truck would not fit underneath a train overpass at Matinecock Court.

The cement truck crashed into the bridge, and the impact dislodged the cement truck barrel, causing the driver to lose control, said Nassau County Inspector Kenneth Lack.

The truck then crashed head-on into a school bus going in the opposite direction, killing the bus driver.

Town officials said four students on the bus, between 5 and 10 years old, were taken to a hospital. Three were treated and released and a fourth child was being held for observation.

A bus aide was hospitalized in good condition and the cement truck driver was being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

People who live in the area say other drivers of large vehicles often try to drive under the overpass, despite numerous warning signs.

"Signs are everywhere, but they don't pay attention," said Lynn Knickman.

The accident suspended service on part of the Long Island Rail Road's Oyster Bay branch Monday.
