Plane Ends Up in Grass After Turn Mishap at MacArthur Airport

A Tampa, Fla-bound flight out of Long Island ended up in the grass Thursday after it veered off the taxiway, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

The FAA said Southwest Flight 4695 was turning onto the taxiway at MacArthur Airport when it swung out and slid into the grass on the side.

Southwest said it was looking into whether the flight crew misjudged the turn or a mechanical error was involved.

No one was injured and the plane was removed from the grass.

Authorities deplaned the passengers after the incident. The flight had been scheduled to arrive in Tampa at 9 a.m.

Southwest Airlines said the passengers were awaiting another plane in the terminal and they would reach their Tampa destination by about 5 p.m.

The crew was pulled from the plane so authorities could conduct a maintenance check, which Southwest said is standard procedure.
