Motorcycle Accident Shuts Down LIE for Hours

The eastbound lanes of the Long Island Expressway have reopened in a part of Suffolk County after a motorcycle accident Wednesday shut down the lanes there, causing miles-long backups as the evening rush got underway.

Authorities said the 56-year-old motorcyclist lost control and crashed near exit 56 in Hauppauge shortly after 4 p.m.

The motorcycle rider, who is from Mastic, was airlifted to a hospital in serious but stable condition.

Lanes were reopened shortly after 7 p.m.
