Long Island Doctor Sentenced to Additional Time for Allegedly Abusing Girls

A former Long Island pediatrician who pleaded guilty to sexual assault and other charges for allegedly drugging and abusing underage girls was sentenced to another 15 years in prison Friday, authorities said.

Rakesh Punn, 58, who was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison as part of a previous plea deal, was sentenced to an additional 15 years for criminal sale of a prescription for a controlled substance and one count of sexual abuse.

Prosecutors allege that Punn drugged, videotaped and sexually assaulted underage girls in his Bethpage office. Punn allegedly used sedatives in a number of cases to render his victims unconscious, according to the Nassau County District Attorney.

“Working with our federal partners we have ensured that this defendant will spend decades of his life behind bars paying for his crimes,” Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas said.

After Punn was sentenced for his initial plea deal, his attorney, Steve Zissou of Bayside, told Newsday that Punn would appeal the sentence.
