Livery Drivers Get Record Tickets in 2012

New York City livery cab drivers received an unprecedented number of tickets last year for alleged illegal street hails.

The tickets were issued by the Taxi and Limousine Commission at a time when the city was pushing to expand legal street hail service outside Manhattan.

The Wall Street Journal reports the TLC wrote 13,006 tickets — double the number in 2011 and more than nine times the amount in 2010.

Livery cab drivers are barred from picking up passengers who hail them from the street.

The Bloomberg administration's effort to allow livery cabs to accept hails outside Manhattan has been approved by the state Legislature. It has stalled in court.

TLC Deputy Commissioner Raymond Scanlon says the agency doubled its inspection staff to 200 in 2011.
