1. New York Daily News Cuts Its Editorial Staff in Half

In a sign of the troubling times that newspapers face to remain afloat, the New York Daily News announced it was laying off half of its editorial staff in an effort to focus more on digital news.

Staff members were told via email by parent company tronc Inc. that in order “to address the significant financial challenges we have faced for years, we are fundamentally restructuring the Daily News” adding that not only will the staff be slashed in half, but the Daily News will re-focus its talent on breaking news involving “crime, civil justice and public responsibility.”

Additionally, it was also announced that top editor Jim Rich and managing editor Kristen Lee would also depart.

2. 26 Raccoons Have Been Found Dead in Central Park: Officials

More than two dozen raccoons have been found dead in Central Park — two of which tested positive for canine distemper virus, officials said.

Twenty-six of the creatures were found dead in various parts of the park in June and July, the first of which were discovered on June 24 and June 28, the city’s Parks Department said.

The illness doesn’t pose any risk to humans, and pets with up-to-date distemper vaccinations can’t catch it, the health department added.

3. Chinatown Street Is Getting Colorful Makeover

A street in Chinatown is getting a colorful makeover. 

Doyers Street will be the canvas for the vibrant mural titled "The Song of Dragons and Flowers" depicting a flying dragon from the artist Chen Dongfan. 

It is set to be completed by the end of the week and the area will become a pedestrian plaza beginning Aug. 1.

4. Tuesday Is National Tequilla Day

It's National Tequilla Day. 

Anejo Mexican restaurant in Tribeca and Hell's Kitchen is featuring a homemade tequila popsicle made with tequila, watermelon, cucumber and lemon juice.

It's served atop a glass of sparking rose.
