A town clerk on Long Island says she plans to open her offices on a Sunday to accommodate applicants seeking same-sex marriage licenses.
North Hempstead Clerk Leslie Gross says she plans to offer licenses from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on July 24. That's the day the recently enacted law allowing same-sex marriages goes into effect.
Town Councilman Fred Pollack tells Newsday that gay people who have waited a long time to get married should not have to wait an extra day.
Most town offices will not begin offering licenses until Monday, July 25, during regular business hours.
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Wednesday that clerks' offices in all five boroughs would be open for a full day of business on Sunday.
