LI Town Offers Half-Off Overdue Parking TIckets

One Long Island town is offering 50 percent off overdue parking tickets for the next three months.

Brookhaven town officials say the “parking ticket amnesty” will run Feb. 15 to May 15. Moving violations are not discounted.

Councilwoman Jane Bonner says the program is intended to help the town collect at least some of $1 million in past due parking fines. She says, “It's not every day the town offers a half-off sale.”

The town is faced with a drop in revenues, including from mortgage tax receipts.

Documents filed in Town Hall show that Brookhaven officials believe $560,000 of the $1 million in overdue fines are “highly collectible.”
