  • Spending must be on children age 13 or younger

New York City lawmakers have passed legislation that will allow candidates to use campaign donations to pay for childcare.

The Daily News reports that the City Council voted on Wednesday to pass the bill. Under the measure, the first $20,000 in childcare expenses would be exempt from New York City spending limits. Spending must be on children age 13 or younger.

Democratic Councilman Keith Powers says the city needs to ensure anyone who wants to run for office has the opportunity to do so.

Democratic Councilwoman Laurie Cumbo says it was difficult to run for office with a newborn last year. Cumbo notes that the measure is necessary because not everyone has a support team that can help with childcare.
